Savory Hummus Waffle

Hummus is extremely versatile. Besides being a classic vegetable and bread dip, hummus can be spread on your favorite burger or sandwich, served up as an appetizer on flatbread, used to replace mayonnaise in salads, and now can be used to make savory hummus waffles. The savory waffle recipe below can be griddled as is, or adapted in a number of ways. In our savory waffles, we use sage and Italian sausage.

Adding hummus to your waffle is not just a modern twist to a classic staple, but has a purpose too! The garbanzo beans in the hummus add moisture to these savory waffles, and decrease the amount of fat in the savory waffle recipe by half! (Yes, we did consider the fat already in the hummus.) The garbanzo beans in the hummus also add protein and fiber to the waffles making them a substantial meal.

On to more good news! Here at Palouse Brand, we are huge fans of whole wheat flour. After all, one cup of wheat berries has 30 grams of protein and 23 grams of fiber! That is some great nutrition you do not want to miss out on! So, of course, we had to include our whole wheat flour in these savory hummus waffles as well! We made this savory waffle recipe using milled Soft White Wheat Berries (whole wheat flour), which can be easily ground in your very own flour mill, Wondermill, grain mill, or attachment.

To control the cost and enhance the nutrition we recommend you make your own hummus. Making your own hummus will cost you a lot less than any store purchased brand on the market today. You can also control the fat and preservatives you are putting into your waffle. Palouse Brand carries three hummus recipe kits to help you. With these kits, all you need to add is olive oil and water to make your own hummus!

These savory waffles can be served topped with even more hummus and dressed greens as an appetizer, or served with a fried egg and a side salad for a complete meal. Enjoy!

Tip for cooking garbanzo beans: Cooking garbanzo beans do not have to be a daunting task. There are several easy ways of cooking garbanzo beans being touted today.
