What is Garbanzo Bean Flour
Garbanzo bean flour or chickpea flour is a mouthwatering, gluten-free flour made from garbanzo beans grown on our farm in Washington State. Making our garbanzo bean flour is so incredibly simple. We take our amazing garbanzo beans and mill them fresh to order in our stone mill. Garbanzo bean flour is high in fiber and a popular ingredient in gluten-free baking. This tasty and nutty flour is a great way for bakers to expand their ingredient repertoire. You can replace up to 25% of the wheat flour in your favorite recipe with garbanzo bean flour. This flour works well with both sweet and savory recipes.
Is Garbanzo Bean Flour Gluten-Free
Yes, garbanzo bean flour is naturally gluten-free. In fact, amongst gluten-free flours, it is one of the most nutrient-packed available. It is "unique in the nutritional benefits, versatility, taste, and texture that it lends to gluten-free cooking". While garbanzo bean flour is naturally gluten free we do mill our garbanzo beans on the same mill as our wheat berries. To prevent cross-contamination we mill a buffer batch in between each product to ensure our product is allergen friendly as well as doing a thorough clean down between milling products.
Garbanzo Bean Flour Recipes
While just becoming popular in the U.S. garbanzo bean flour has been very popular in international kitchens for a while now. With this long-standing popularity, there is no shortage of garbanzo bean flour recipes. You can use garbanzo bean flour to make instant hummus, garbanzo bean flour pancakes or delicious biscotti.
One way that garbanzo bean flour really separates itself from the crowd is in its binding power. Garbanzo bean flour is a naturally dense flour and that denseness has innate binding properties, which lends baked goods a hardy yet soft texture when used with other gluten-free flours. Garbanzo bean flour does excel in baking recipes that are leavened with baking soda or baking powder, however, in recipes leavened with yeast, mixing of other flours is required.
Garbanzo bean flour is for more than just baking, it is ideal for cooking and not just instant falafel. The creations with garbanzo bean flour are endless: vegan cheese, pizza crust, roasted poblano cilantro empanadas and more. When mixed with water and heated, garbanzo bean flour makes a great roux like substance that adds creaminess to dressings, sauces, and gravies. Garbanzo bean flour can also be a great substitute for eggs. Simply add ¼ cup of chickpea flour to the dry ingredients and increase the liquid in the recipe by ¼ cups.
