Unlike lots of other baked products which are better from a bakery, this is so far superior to what you purchase at the grocery store, it's not even close. And in addition to being delicious to eat, it's also extremely easy to make!  Wait until you try our easy recipe for pita bread!  Good news and good nutrition come with making your own homemade pita bread.

We have four simple and basic ingredients in our recipe for pita bread, but boy does it hit a home run with flavor.  Our whole wheat pita bread recipe has a slightly nutty, slightly sweet flavor along with a chewy texture, a mildly charred exterior, and a big pocket for stuffing.

Stuffing pockets of pita bread are one of our top choices for sandwiches. So portable.  So neatly contained. So easy to eat and, so light compared to slices of bread!  The pitas you make at home are completely glorious and watching them puff up in your oven is just like magic in the kitchen.

How to Make Pita Bread

                              1. Preheat oven to 500° and place rack on the bottom rung of your oven (this is very important).
                              2. Sift together 2 cups of flour and the yeast.  Add water and salt and mix well.
                              3. Gradually add in the remaining flour a little at a time and, just enough until the dough begins to clean off the sides of the bowl.  When this happens, stop adding more flour in the bowl.
                              4. Knead the dough for approximately 4-5 minutes adding just enough extra flour so the dough is not sticking to the surface you are working on.  This is the perfect time to add any herbs or spices to knead in.  Be very careful not to over-knead your dough.
                              5. Form dough into 9-10 balls.
                              6. On a floured surface, roll each ball out into a 5-6 inch round, approximately ¼ inch thick, creating the pitas.  Sprinkle with enough flour to prevent sticking.  Place on a non-stick baking sheet or lightly spray the baking sheet with coconut oil.  Let the pitas rise for 30 minutes, or until they are slightly raised then turn them over and bake.
                              7. Bake on the bottom rack of the oven for 5 minutes and no longer.  The instant hot heat will help them puff up and give their exteriors a little color.
                              8. When you remove the pitas from the oven they will be fairly hard but they will soften as they cool. Immediately and while they are still warm, place them in an airtight container and allow them to cool.
                              9. Cut the pitas in half crosswise and stuff then with your favorite filling.
                              10. Pitas can be reheated in the microwave or for a short time in the oven at 350° until just warm.
